Baptism

What happens when someone is Baptised?

Some preparation is involved before the baptism service so that the parents of a child, young person or adult being baptised understand what promises are being made.  The promises of baptism focus on what it means to be a Christian.

When a baby is baptised, the parents and sometimes Godparents, make the vows for the child. Water is essentially used in a baptism service. Water will be poured over the head of the baby or person being baptised. This is done three times; “in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit” to signify the way God comes to us.

During the service a cross is marked with holy oil on the forehead of the child or person being baptised. This is a symbol ‘marking’ us as belonging to Christ. This symbolism represents Christ’s life, death and rising from the dead.

Often a candle is given to the person being baptised or the parents and Godparents of the baby. This is a reminder that we are to follow in the light of Christ in the way we live.

How do I become Baptised or Baptise my child?

If you wish to be baptised or to baptise your child, or if you are interested in renewing your Baptismal promises, speak to the Rector of your nearest church.  The Rector will be able to advise you on the preparations required and the practices of that individual congregation.
