A Welcome from the Bishop of Argyll and The Isles

The Rt Revd David Railton

Dear friends,

Grace and peace to you, and a very warm welcome to the website of the Diocese of Argyll and The Isles. Whether you are a member of one of our congregations, a visitor to this part of Scotland, or simply exploring the life of the Scottish Episcopal Church, I’m glad you’ve found your way here.

Our diocese covers a vast and beautiful area — from remote islands to small towns and rural communities — where faithful people gather to worship, to support one another, and to live out the Christian life in all its richness and challenge.

As a diocese, we are committed to growing intentional Christian communities, growing as disciples, and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. These priorities guide our common life and remind us that faith is not static — it is something we grow into, together, with God's help.

A verse of Scripture that speaks deeply to this comes from St Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians: “You are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it” (1 Corinthians 12:27). We all belong, we all have something to offer, and we all have something to receive.

The spirit of community and shared faith is also deeply rooted in the Celtic tradition, which continues to shape our life here. A saying attributed to St Brigid puts it beautifully: “It is in the shelter of each other that the people live.” In our parishes and gatherings across the diocese, that sense of shelter, belonging, and shared journey is very much alive.

I hope this website gives you a sense of who we are and what matters to us. Please do feel free to get in touch if you’d like to learn more, connect with a local church, or explore the Christian faith. You will find a warm welcome.

With every blessing,

+ David, Argyll and The Isles
